BOOK DESIGN, TYPESETTING, VISUAL NARRATIVE
This project focused on translating the transcript of an episode of the NPR podcast This American Life titled “How To Be Alone” into a printed book design. The episode explores various forms of aloneness—both purposeful and unwanted—through five distinct stories. The goal was to visually reflect the episode’s emotional depth and narrative complexity, using stark contrast, bold black and white imagery, and minimal, impactful typography to let the words take center stage.
CHALLENGE + SOLUTION
The challenge was to convey the emotions of aloneness, from peaceful solitude to painful isolation, using only typography and imagery. Each story brought a unique view, from an astronaut’s isolation in space to the solitary life of a whale. I used a minimalist design, with stark black-and-white contrasts and clean, bold typography to emphasize the rawness of each narrative. This design created a visual rhythm that let the typography speak while pairing it with imagery that reflected each story’s tone, capturing the duality of solitude and isolation in a striking format. The result was a cohesive, immersive piece that thoughtfully elevated the transcript.
