How To Be Alone — Book Design + Visual Narrative
EDITORIAL BOOK DESIGN • TYPESETTING • NARRATIVE SYSTEMS
This editorial book design was commissioned to adapt the transcript of How To Be Alone, an episode of NPR's This American Life, into a printed format. The goal was to translate the emotionally layered audio into a physical reading experience that extended its life beyond sound, holding multiple expressions of solitude within a single system.
The solution was a typography-forward layout built around contrast, pacing, and pause. Bold type, generous negative space and minimal imagery to mirror the rhythm of the narratives creates a reading experience that feels immersive, quiet when it needs to be, and emotionally direct.
